Medford High School Rowing

We will move practice back to school due to weather.  I will meet with anyone interested in joining the rowing team at 3:15 in front of the Gym.  If you have paper work completed you will be allowed to attend the practice that will follow.  We will hold this joint practice time Tuesday - Friday of this week while we get old and new members paperwork sorted out.  Please bring a friend or a freshman.  We will have a better idea of when we will start full schedule on the water with coaches after this week.  Thank You Coach McCormick.

The MRWA is hosting a photography contest to show off pictures of the Mystic River. How cool would it be if we could get the team on there? Here's a link to the site and some rules. If you've got any awesome pictures hiding away, send them in!

Volunteer Hours? 08/03/2011

Any of you out there need volunteer hours, or just want to help keep the river clean?  If you're free on August 13th, the Mystic River Watershed Association needs some help clearing water chestnuts from the Mystic. See the details below if you're interested...

Last year our end-of-year water chestnut harvest yielded 372 baskets. This year our goal is to harvest 500 baskets of water chestnut for our final event!

Please sign up online and help us out with what will be a fun and productive morning on the water!

On Saturday, August 13th,Groundwork Somerville, with support from the Mystic River Watershed Association and the Friends of the Mystic River, will host a community event focusing on the removal of invasive water chestnut from the Mystic River. Using canoes, kayaks, and small boats, volunteers will pull water chestnuts out of the water by hand and then deposit the harvested plants at a designated shore site. Volunteers who have canoes or kayaks are encouraged to bring their own. If you need a boat, we will provide a boat for you by counting needed boats through the registration process. Volunteers are also needed on land.

Volunteers should meet at 8:00 AM at the DCR boat ramp adjacent to 75 South Street in Medford, MA. A limited amount of parking is available on South Street; additional parking is available on nearby Curtis Street, Maple Ave, Touro Ave, and Manning Street.

Please register for this event using our Online Form

If you have any questions, contact jonathan@groundworksomerville.org orpatrick@mysticriver.org
Boaters are required to use life preservers/personal flotation devices (PFD’s).
Immediately following the hand-pulling event, lunch and refreshments will be available for volunteers at the put-in site. Learn more about water chestnuts at www.mysticriver.org/invasive-species/.

The Malden River was very busy today as area schools and several teams from Maine competed in the "Mooses on the Malden" Regatta.  Medford was well represented in the medal count.

Congratulations to our winning crews:
Girls  2nd Varsity 4+  1st Place
Girls Varsity 4+  2nd Place
Girls Novice 8+  2nd Place
Boys Novice 4+  2nd Place

This was a great tune-up for the State Championship Regatta next Sunday at Lowell.

Thank you to everyone who recycled their electronics, and a big thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and effort.  Yesterday's fundraiser was a huge success!  We filled the entire truck with old TV's, computers and other electronics.  These donations help keep the program afloat (literally).

GBL Regatta 04/30/2011

We had a great, sunny day of racing today thanks to the lovely coaches in Greater Lawrence! We had great competition to boot, including teams from Malden, Somerville, Cambridge, Arlington-Belmont and Greater Lawrence. All of the crews had tight finishes, especially the boys varsity 8+ which captured the silver just two seconds behind Cambridge. The novice team learned a lot at their first regatta and hope to try things out at Novice Challenge in Lowell next weekend. There's a lot more racing to come this season, so stay tuned!

The coaches are currently planning out the final details of the regatta this weekend. Stay tuned for more info!

The date has been set for the M-Club awards banquet. It will be Thursday, May 26th at the Irish-American in Malden at 6:00pm. Seniors should plan on attending and looking pretty. A limited number of juniors can come and show their support as well. Dinner will be provided.
